
On the line, 5-gallon preforms are stubborn—thick-walled and unforgiving. If the heating tunnel can’t deliver heat that’s stable, fast, and even, you end up with weak biaxial orientation, stress lines you can see, and scrap piling up before the mold even closes. You don’t need “more heat.” You need the right heat, with repeatable control.
What matters, technically
For 5-gallon large preforms, we run short-wave quartz halogen emitters built to handle the thermal load. Each lamp is typically 1.5–3.0 kW, with filaments that come up to temperature in seconds so the heating tunnel keeps pace with the cycle instead of chasing it. They run on standard line voltages—220–240 V or 380–480 V, depending on the setup—and we match the envelope and mounting so the lamp drops into the same holders and reflectors you already have. Connection is R7s, the same bi-pin interface most blow molding heating sections use, so swap-in is straightforward. We hold output stability so preform surface temperature stays consistent across long runs, and the lamps are built to take the thermal shock of repeated starts and stops without the filament giving up early.
Why this works in 5-gallon
On 5-gallon, the bottleneck is almost always preform heating. With infrared emitters matched to the job, you can shorten the heating window and still hit the right stretch temperature. That keeps take rates up and cycle times steady. You also get more consistent wall distribution because the preform heats more evenly, which reduces the urge to overheat and risk crystallization. Energy use drops too, since short-wave IR puts the energy where it counts—directly into the preform—and the emitters only run when the machine is running, not during long idles.
The details that bite you
Plug-and-play only happens when the reflector geometry and zone wiring match your OEM layout. If the machine uses older lamp lengths or a different reflector focal distance, expect a minor mechanical update—usually a bracket change and a quick retune of the heating profile. **Keep the power clean.**Large preform heaters are sensitive to voltage imbalance and transients, and those spikes will cut lamp life short. And don’t overlook the basics: keep the emitter surface clean and the reflectors aligned. Even a thin layer of dust can throw off heating uniformity more than you’d think.
