A Better Way to Handle Your Sidel SBO 4/6 and Krones Contiform Lamps
Keeping a PET blow molding line running is always a bit of a balancing act. You’re trying to get the heat just right without watching your energy bill skyrocket. But here’s the real headache: when OEM lamp prices jump, you’re stuck. You need a replacement that doesn’t mess with your temperature profile or kill your efficiency, but you don’t want to overpay just for a brand name.
Getting the heat right
Sidel and Krones machines rely on short-wave infrared (SWIR) lamps to get those preforms hot—fast. We build our lamps to match the exact voltage and wattage of the originals. We use high-wattage quartz tubes because that’s the only way to hit the glass transition temperature in a matter of seconds. One quick tip:**Double-check your voltage.**Whether you’re running 230V or 400V, you have to be sure. If you get it wrong, you’ll either end up with under-heated plastic or a burnt-out filament. Neither is a good day at the office.
The nitty-gritty on materials
We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because these lamps go through a brutal cycle of heating and cooling, and cheap glass just can’t handle that kind of thermal shock. Depending on where the lamp sits in the oven, we might add a specialized coating. This bounces the heat back toward the preform and keeps it away from your machine frame. Then there are the connectors—usually R7s or Sk15. We keep the tolerances tight. If a connector is loose, you get hotspots. Those hotspots melt your sockets, and before you know it, your entire line is dead in the water.
A few things to keep in mind
These are drop-in replacements, which makes the swap easy and cuts down your maintenance costs. But a word of caution. If you push these tubes to their absolute maximum wattage, your oven’s cooling fans have to work harder. If your cooling system is getting old, you might notice the oven getting a bit warmer than usual. Just keep a close eye on your bottle consistency for the first 48 hours. Once you’ve dialed it in, you’re good to go.
